Birth name in Bohemia was Jan Pelikan. He was born in House # 6 in Hluboka, Bohemia, which is located near the larger town of Krucemburk. House #6, pictured at the left as it appeared in 2001. According to property records, the farm had been in the Pelikan family name since June 1728. John inherited the family farm. He married Frantiska Henzl on November 9, 1874. They had five children, the oldest, Marie, died in Hluboka at age 7. After losing his farm due to personal problems, John left his family in Hluboka in poverty and immigrated on the ship "Elbe," arriving in New York City May 29, 1888. He did well in America, and after 3 years he sent for Frantiska and the children. Frantiska died six years later of influenza. After the death of his wife Frantiska, he married Filomena Tichy, that marriage ending in divorce. John's problems resulted in alienation from his children, and at age 68 he was committed to the State Hospital in Lincoln, where he died at age 80. ~~~~~~~~~~~ From The Saline County Democrat, January 15, 1931, transcribed by Linda Berney: John Pelikan Dies - John Pelikan passed away in a Lincoln hospital Saturday, January 10. He was a resident of Saline county for many years, having settled here in the year 1888, after coming to America from his native land, Czechoslovakia. He was born April 16, 1850 and at the time of his death was 80 years, 10 months and 25 days of age. Mr. Pelikan was married to Miss Frantiska Henzel and four children were born to the union. The family came to America in 1891. Mr. Pelikan being unable to bring them when he came here to establish a home. Mrs. Pelikan died in 1897. He is survived by his sons, Frank of Wilber, John and Anton of Palmer and a daughter, Mrs. Francis Kolar of Daykin, Nebr., fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Pelikan was a long time member of the Z.C.B.J. lodge and was a well known resident of the Wilber community. The funeral services were held from the Havel & Houser chapel Monday afternoon, January 12, with Rev. K. O. Zavadil officiating. The Z. C.B.J. lodge also took part in the services. Pasek's quartette sang. Interment was in the Bohemian National cemetery.
