More details about John's early life in Bohemia and immigration can be found on the memorial for his mother, Frantiska Pelikan. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From The Palmer Journal, March 28, 1963, transcribed by Linda Berney: Funeral Services For John Pelican -- John Pelican, 82, died Sunday at the Central City Hospital where he had been taken for an operation. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Robert Ditterline were held at Palmer Methodist church Tuesday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m. and burial made in Rose Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Edward Santin, Fred Santin, Archie Snodgrass, Henry Santin, Jr., Frank Santin and Joseph Santin. Singers were Mrs. Richard Lemmerman and Mrs. Thomas Condell with Mrs. William Kucera, organist. Mr. Pelican was born in Czechoslovakia January 31, 1881, to John and Frances Pelican. The family came to America when John was nine, settling in Saline County, Nebraska. John came to Nance County to begin work on an early irrigation project which was started in the Loup Valley below Palmer. He had fallen in love with America and Nebraska and began farming here. He and Anna John were married October 7, 1907. They farmed in Nance County until retiring and moving to Palmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, 2 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Mrs. Helen Grosch of Grand Island; four sons, Louis of Chapman, Lumer, Leonard and Stanley of Palmer; two brothers, Anton of Palmer and Frank of Wilber, Nebraska; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.
