DECATUR, ALABAMA - Amon Smith, 75, 1523 River Bend Place SE, Decatur, Alabama, died February 5, 1989, at his residence. Mr. Smith was born January 30, 1914 in Marion County, the son of Joe and Montie Bell (Nix) Smith. While living in Winfield, he was a farmer and owned and operated coal mines and transported coal. He moved to Jefferson County in 1958 and was employed with Southern Electric Steel Company until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gardendale and had been a resident of Decatur since December 1988. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Icie McKay Smith, Decatur, one son - Bill J. Smith, Decatur; three daughters - Mrs. Maylene Hallmark, Flower Mound, Texas., Mrs. Betty Bowers, Decatur, Mrs. Vi Pugh, Montgomery; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother - Leamon Joe Smith, Winfield; two sisters - Mrs. Amie Kendricks and Mrs. Marie McCorkle, both of Muscle Shoals. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 8, 1989, at 2 p.m. from the McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles funeral Home. Reverend Harold Pitts was the officiating minister. Active pall bearers were Ricky Smith, Randy Smith, Rusty Smith, Mark Pugh, Larry Pugh, and Jimmy Petty. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery with Miles funeral Home of Winfield directing the service.
