American Fork Citizen, American Fork, Utah, 23 Jun 1966 Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 21, at 1 p.m. in Pleasant Grove for Robert S. Stagg, 47, who died late Saturday in a Salt Lake Hospital. The tragedy was the aftermath of a double shooting in the early morning hours of Saturday, in which his estranged wife. Frenda Gardner Stagg, 37, was shot in the back and is in good condition in the American Fork Hospital. Police received a call soon after 1 a.m. Saturday from his wife, at her residence in American Fork, 371 West 3rd North, asking officers to come to her home as she feared her husband. Police arrived to find her in a room of the home, shot in the back. Pursuing a car disappearing down the road they followed it at high speeds to Pleasant Grove, where it went out of control and crashed at Eleventh North and First East. Officers found Stagg with a bullet wound in the head, apparently self-administered as he fled. They also found a single shot .22 bolt action rifle with a spent shell. Mr. Stagg and his wife had been separated for some time. Funeral services were held at the Olpin-Sundberg Mortuary in Pleasant Grove. Mr. Stagg was born August 25, 1918, in Pleasant Grove, a son of William and Rhoda Robison Stagg. He married Frenda Gardner on May 20, 1946, In Salt Lake City. He was employed by the Utah State Road Commission. At the time of his death he held the office of elder In the American Fork Third Ward LDS Church. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his widow of American Fork; and the following sons and daughters, Mrs. Douglas (Lynn) Leonard, Kaysville; Rich and Leon, Steven Gilbert, Larry Gene, William Reid, Kelly Ann, all of American Fork; his mother of Salt Lake City; brothers and sisters, Mrs. Merrill (Florence) Smith, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Harvey (Margret) Hansen, American Fork; Mrs. Sam (Leah) Calder, Mrs. Dale (Beth) Parker and Richard Stagg, all of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. Thomas (Nell) Williams, Anchorage, Alaska.
