Updated 30 April 2020, with both HANSON and HANSEN - different version spellings of the surname - needed to be so stated, per the researcher, who found, and provided materials, listed below: [email protected] , January 5, 2021. Technical Sergeant Donald Hansen while leading Soldiers of Company G died on 3 February 1944, a result of enemy fire while in direct combat with Japanese forces on Kwajalein Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Eastern Mandates (Marshall Islands). T/SGT Hansen was a non-commissioned officer serving in G Company, 2nd Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On or about 5 October 1951, a local newspaper carried the following article: SERVICE SLATED FOR CHICO SOLIDER WHO DIED ON KWAJALEIN Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm., Saturday at the Brusie Funeral Home for T/Sgt. Donald G. Hansen, who was killed in the fighting for Kwajalein Atoll during World War II. The body of Sgt. Hansen, who served as a member of Chico's Company G, National Guard, arrived in Chico yesterday under military escort. Sgt. Hansen was born on April 27, 1918 in Scobey, Mont., the son of Mrs Marie Hansen of 1041 Deveney Avenue and the late Hans P. Hansen. As a small child the family moved to Orland and in 1929 they came to Chico and established their home. Sgt. Hansen, who joined Company G in 1937 following his attendance at the local high school, was killed in battle on Kwajalein Atoll on February 3, 1944. He was 26 years of age. He left with that unit early in March 1941 and went with the organization to Kiska and then to the Southwest Pacific where the regiment to which he belonged carried the brunt of the battle in driving the Japs from the heavily fortified Kwajalein. It was said by his former commander that Hansen was one of the most faithful and interested members of the old National Guard unit, and there was never a job to be done that he was not willing and often volunteered to accomplish. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Marie Hansen, two brothers, Elmo Hansen, of Chico, and Harvey of San Rafael, and one sister, Mrs. Walter Jaspar of Orland. The Friday 5 October 1951 Chico Enterprise-Record carried the following brief article: Hansen Services Slated for Saturday Afternoon Final rites will be conducted in the chapel of the Brusie Funeral Home Saturday at 2:30 p.m.for T SGT Donald Gordon Hansen who was killed in World War II while fighting for Kwajalein Atoll. Rev Schabacher of the local Redeemer Lutheran Church and Rev P.A. Pickelman, former pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Chico Cemetery.
