Bio

James Carroll Morris, born on March 20, 1847, in Tennessee, led a remarkable life as a farmer, husband, and father. While the details of his family's origins remain shrouded in mystery, James's journey as a devoted family man and hardworking farmer is a testament to his character. Raised alongside his siblings, Thomas, William, Lewis, and Mary, James's upbringing was marked by a sense of resilience and determination. Although the identity of his father remains unknown, DNA evidence suggests that George Washington Hale, a Confederate soldier, may have been his biological father. George Washington Hale tragically perished in a POW camp in Illinois in 1863. The circumstances surrounding James's parentage have intrigued generations of descendants, fueling theories and discussions within the family. James's early life was characterized by a nomadic existence, as the family moved between Hardin County, Tennessee, Lauderdale, Alabama, and Wayne County, Tennessee. The reasons for their frequent relocations are not well-documented. However, the Morris family's adaptability and resourcefulness shine through their ability to create a stable home in various locations. In 1875, James Carroll Morris embarked on a new chapter of his life by marrying Rebecca Hinton in Wayne County, Tennessee. Their union was marked by love, commitment, and the shared dream of building a prosperous future for their family. Tragically, their firstborn daughter, M.L. Morris, passed away in 1878. James and Rebecca remained resilient and continued to expand their family. They were blessed with five more children: Noah Franklin, Nancy Pairlee, Ben Thomas, Sarah Ada, and George Harrison. The joys of parenthood were both abundant and bittersweet, as they experienced the devastating loss of Nancy Pairlee at the age of ten in 1890. Throughout his adult life, James Carroll Morris dedicated himself to the art of farming. The land became both his livelihood and his passion, as he toiled under the sun to provide for his family. On October 20, 1900, James's journey came to an end, as he passed away from unknown causes, possibly a parasitic infection. His departure marked the end of an era, but his legacy lived on in the hearts and minds of his loved ones. James Carroll Morris was laid to rest alongside his beloved mother, Sarah (Sally) E. Morris, in Brown Cemetery. Tricia Kannegieter Hetrick JC's Great Great Granddaughter June 2023
