Rebecca Hinton was born on September 24, 1859, in Wayne County, Tennessee, to Calvin C. "Dick" Hinton and Mary Holt. She grew up in a large family, shaped by both love and loss. Many of her siblings passed away young, a sorrow that marked much of her early life and instilled in her a quiet resilience. In 1875, at just sixteen years old, Rebecca married James Carroll Morris. Together, they built a life centered around hard work, family, and the land they farmed. Life was not easy—Rebecca and James lost their firstborn daughter, M.L. Morris, in 1878 and later suffered the heartbreak of losing their nine-year-old daughter, Nancy Pairlee, in 1890. Despite these tragedies, Rebecca remained steadfast, raising their surviving children: Noah Franklin, Ben Thomas, Sarah Ada, and George Harrison. As a homemaker and farmer, Rebecca's life was defined by perseverance. She had little formal education, completing only the first grade, but her wisdom and strength carried her through decades of hardship. She and James worked tirelessly to provide for their family, despite the poverty that surrounded them. After James's death in 1900, Rebecca remained in Wayne County. By 1920, she was living with her youngest son, George, and his family, staying with them through years of struggles and joys. Rebecca lived to be 83, passing away on July 11, 1943, in Lutts, Tennessee, after suffering a stroke. Though she lived a life of hardship, she endured with quiet strength, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and devotion that lives on in her descendants.
