Bio

Mary Elizabeth "Dink" Morris Hinton was born in 1856 in Tennessee to Sarah "Sally" E. Morris. Though her father's identity is not officially documented, DNA evidence suggests he was George Washington Hale, a Confederate soldier from Sally's home county who died in a POW camp in Illinois in 1863. Sally, a resilient woman, raised Mary alongside her other children amidst a life filled with challenges and uncertainties. Mary grew up with four siblings: Thomas, James, William, and Lewis Pinkton. The family lived in various places across Hardin County, Tennessee, Lauderdale County, Alabama, and Wayne County, Tennessee. Their frequent moves reflected the hardships they faced. Despite the lack of official records about the family's origins, Mary became a central figure in their story. Known as "Dink," a term of endearment, she embodied the strength and determination passed down through her mother, Sally. Mary's life was shaped by the resilience required of women in her time, navigating societal expectations and the struggles of survival in post-Civil War America. In 1880, Mary married Calvin C. Hinton, a widower with older children. Together, they built a blended family and had three children of their own: Mary Ida, born in 1880; Laura Ann, born in 1882; and James Coleman, born in 1888. Tragically, Calvin passed away in 1888, leaving Mary to raise her children on her own. Her fortitude during this time spoke volumes about her character and devotion to her family. Mary spent her later years in Lutts, Tennessee, where she remained surrounded by family and the community she had helped to nurture. She passed away in 1925 at the age of 79 due to high blood pressure. Mary "Dink" Morris Hinton's life was a testament to perseverance, love, and the strength of maternal bonds. Though much about her early life remains a mystery, her legacy endures in the stories shared by her descendants and the indelible mark she left on her family.
