Kliem, who surrendered to officers last Friday night after the shooting, blamed "family trouble" as the cause for the killing of Alphonse Joe Schmidt. The shooting occurred at 9:00 p.m. Friday at the Midway Cafe between Richmond and Rosenberg. Kliem shot Schmidt twice with a shotgun, then came to Richmond and looked up officers to tell them what he had done. Schmidt was rushed to the Fort Bend Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Kliem was released on $2500 bond pending the November session of the grand jury.
