Death Caused By Strangulation; Family Unaware Of Tragedy Until Following Morning When Little Sister Finds Brother Dead In Bed; Wanted To Join Navy; Was Student At Goldendale High School And Member Of Boy Scouts Just what the motive was for Ralph Edgar, 16-year-old Goldendale high school youth and son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Edgar, to take his own life Monday evening, will probably never be known. The well known youth had tied two socks to a belt, looped the belt around his neck and fastened the other end to the iron rail at the top of his bed, strangling himself to death, Sheriff Russell Woodward, who made the investigation reported. The family was unaware of the tragedy until about 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, when Ralph's sister, Naomi, 14, went to his room to awaken him. Apparently the youth had made no struggle as there were no signs of such, it was reported. Sheriff Woodward was called immediately by the Edgar family and an investigation was made by Dr. Rosser P. Atkinson and Z.O. Brooks, county prosecuting attorney. The officials were of the opinion that the boy had died shortly after he went to bed. Mrs. Edgar and children said that they heard no unusual noise after Ralph had retired to his bedroom. Frank Edgar, father of Ralph, who had spent the weekend in Goldendale visiting his family, told a representative of The Sentinel that in his opinion the boy never took his life intentionally. "I can't think of a reason Ralph had for doing it. He did, however, want Mrs. Edgar and myself to say he was 17 years old, so he could enlist in the navy, but was not insistent upon it. I know that Ralph and some of his friends have been talking about the war and trying all sorts of things, such as putting loops around their necks and tightening the cord, until they almost passed out. I was home until Monday noon and had dinner with my family. Ralph seemed to be in high spirits. I just couldn't believe it when my daughter called me in Pasco the following morning," Mr. Edgar said. Ralph was a freshman in high school and a member of the local Boys Scout troop. He was born in Potter, Nebraska, April 19, 1929 and came to Goldendale with his parents when two years old. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Edgar; two brothers, Clyde and John, both serving in the navy and somewhere in the Pacific; five sisters, Mrs. Ruth Massey, Mrs. Melford Hamllik, June, Frances and Naomi, all of Goldendale. Jack Edgar, an uncle, is serving in the navy and is in the hospital at Shoemaker, California. Private services were held Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Church for family and friends, with Rev. J.J. Hartnett officiating. At 10:00 a.m. burial was from the Phillips Funeral Home with graveside services at the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
