Jimmie G. Nelson, 74, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at home. Jimmie was born Jan. 31, 1936, in Loup County to John Emmett and Rosa Agnes (Schlafer) Nelson. Survivors are: wife, Jane of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Jeff Hoyle of Lincoln; brother, Leonard of Idaho; grandson, Anthony; granddaughters, Brianna and Madison; brothers in law, Steve Todd of Scottsbluff and Don Dever of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews. He attended schools at Kent, Custer County District 47 graduating from Sargent High School with the class of 1953. He entered the United States Air Force on Nov. 2, 1954, where he served as an aerospace technician and flight engineer. While in the service he completed an aircraft maintenance technician course at Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas. Foreign service consisted of tours in Japan, Korea, Germany, Philippines and Vietnam. Dec. 31, 1976 after 22 years of service Jimmie retired from the Air Force and moved to Taylor. While living in Taylor, Jimmie owned and operated a small engine shop. He was very active in coaching Little League Baseball. He graduated from Western Nebraska Technical College with a B.A. degree in Automotive Technology. He returned to Taylor and worked at Double D's Service Station as a mechanic. He was united in marriage to Jane D. Dever on Aug. 19, 1991, in Omaha later moving to Grand Island, where he was employed by Jensen's Automotive, K-Mart Automotive, Penske Automotive and Velocity Express. He belonged to VFW Post 6159, where he was commander for eight years and commander for District 12 from 1985-1987. Jimmie was Grand Commander for the state of Nebraska for the Military Order of the Cootie. He was seam squirrel for the local MOC (Military Order of the Cootie) pup tent Loup to Loup 9, American Legion in Ord, Disabled American Veterans in Broken Bow, the Non commissioned Officers Association, Air Force Sergents Association, America Veteran's, Eagles and Elks. He was also the VFW Representative at the Grand Island Veteran's Home and the Grand Island VA Medical Center for many years. He liked to watch Nebraska football, but his real enjoyment came from spending time with his three grandchildren. His parents, three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
