Bio

Leonard Arthur Nelson September 9, 1933 - April 22, 2015 Leonard was born September 9, 1933 to Emmitt and Rose Nelson. He passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. He was one of eight children raised on the family farm near Sargent, Nebraska. In 1951 he enlisted in the United States Army where he fought in the Korean War and then served the remainder of his tour in Germany. He was Honorably Discharged in Nov. 1954. He remained in the Army Reserves until being Honorably Discharged in March 1960. After returning home, he married the love of his life, Barbara Squier, on September 8, 1955. After the birth of their first son in 1956, they moved to Caldwell, Idaho where they had four more children. In 1957, Leonard went to work at Kindness Animal Hospital where he remained for 17 years. In 1968, he took up a hobby that would be one of his lifelong passions, over the next 38 years, of training racehorses. He loved all the endless hours of hard work it took to get the thrill of winning a horse race. In 1974, he went to work for Interwest Veterinary Supply of Ogden, Utah, traveling on the road as a Veterinarian Pharmaceutical salesman all over the Northwest. In 1985, he went to work at MWI Veterinary Supply in Nampa, Idaho, where he remained until his retirement in 2003. He was well liked by all he met and worked with and earned several Top Salesman of the year awards. He loved putting on barbecues at many of the Veterinary Conventions he attended. After retiring, he and Barbara fulfilled their dream and traveled with their RV, enjoying several years of siteseeing and visiting family. He was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved spending time with family and friends attending any school function, game or social event he could. He served on the Board of Directors of the Idaho Thoroughbred Association and the HBPA. He is a member of the American Legion of Boise and a lifetime member of the DAV and VFW. He is part of the family at Collister Community Church. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Preceded in death by his parents and all his brothers and sisters. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; children: Don (Crystal), John (Trish), Bruce (Tammy), Pam (Gary Loveland), and Cindy (Ren Rodgers); 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family in Idaho and Nebraska. A visitation will be held Tuesday, April 28, 2015 from 4pm to 7pm, at Bowman Funeral Parlor, 10254 W. Carlton Bay Dr, Garden City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 29th, at 10 am ,followed by a light luncheon at Collister Community Church, 4709 W. State St, Boise. He will be laid to rest at a private ceremony at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.
