Bio
William Lewis Chesser was born in Tennesee on 10 December 1819. His parents were Daniel Chesser and Martha Nancy Sparks. His mother and William moved to Illinois when his father died in 1825. she met and married George W. Joy in 1826. The combined family moved to Neosha Community in southwest Missouri. On 12 May 1837 Willaim Lewis Chesser, his parents, and several other families formed the New Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In May of 1841 he married Mary Ann "Polly" Reed, one of the chruch families. By 1850 census William, Polly, and serveral of the families had moved to the Milam and Williamson District in the Backbone Valley of Texas which later became Burnet County. In 1848 William Lewis was recruited for the compny of soliders for James S. Gillet's compnay and was mustered into federal service on 16 June 1848 for the Texas Mexican War. In 1851 Willaim Lewis and serverl others petitoned the Texas Legislature to form Burnett County. He was a first county commissioner for the new Burnett County. In 1863 Mary Ann "Polly" Reed was the first person to die of a diptheria epidemic in Burnet County. She was buried in the Joy Cemetery located not far from their home. By 15 December 1863 Willaim Lewis volunteered and joined the "Frontier Troops" which was organized to fight the Indians who were marauding and killing the settlers. After the death of his wife William Lewis moved to Gillespie County where he married a widow by the name of Mrs. Daniger who had two daughters. She died shortly after the marriage. On 03 August 1868, William Lewis married Lucretia Jane McDonald Fairchild in Gillespie County. Lucretia Jane had been married previously and the family increased in size by six children from a previous marriage. In 1872 Rebecca and Willaim Lewis filed suit against their father to settle the estate of their mother. The court case continued several years. William Lewis had made a business trip to San Antonio, Bexar County and while there become ill and died. This was between the date of 5 Feb 1876 and the date of the citation for his appearance to show cause dated 28 July 1876. His grave has not been found. Clifton Cecil Young, his great-great grandson, records that he was buried in the old Nine Mile Cemetery on Fredericksberg Road, west of San Antonio in Bexar County, Texas. The cemetery that best fits that description is the Locke Hill Cemetery on the corner of Fredericksburg & Huebner road in San Antonio. An extensive examinaton of the cemetery by Richard A. Young his great-great-great grandson did not show a headstone for William Lewis Chesser.
