DEATH TAKES J.F. CRAIG AT AGE OF 83 - John Francis Craig, 83, a lifetime resident of the Missouri Valley community, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 23. Mr. Craig suffered a fractured hip in a fall in May, 1966, but in a few months he was able to walk down town and drive his car again. Last August he underwent a serious operation and went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Clifford Wells, in Council Bluffs. Eight days ago he entered the Rose Vista Home in Woodbine. He became seriously ill Tuesday afternoon and died in an ambulance while being rushed to Community Memorial hospital in Missouri Valley. The rosary will be recited in the Hennessey-Van Cleave & Hurley funeral home at 8 p.m., Thursday. Funeral services will be held in St. Patrick's Church at 10 a.m., Friday Dec. 26 with the Rev. Fr. James J. Wadsworth officiating. interment will be in Oak Grove cemetery here. Mr. Craig was born at Missouri Valley Jan. 29, 1886, the son of John and Mary Martin Craig. He was reared in the Missouri Valley community and farmed in Harrison county until 1955 when he retired and moved to town. He was township assessor for St. John township for 35 years and was secretary of Pleasant Hill school district in that township for 45 years. On March 3, 1908 at St. Patrick's Church in Missouri Valley he was married to Zora Jones. His wife died Feb. 2, 1962. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Clifford Wells (Agatha) of Council Bluffs; one son, Paul M. Craig of St. Paul, Minn.; a grandson, Craig W. Wells of Council Bluffs; one granddaughter, Mrs. William Havelka of Rancho Cordova, Cal.; two great-grandsons, Craig W. Wells, Jr., and Christopher W. Wells of Council Bluffs; and a great-granddaughter, Tracy Lynn Wells of Council Bluffs. (Missouri Valley Times, Missouri Valley, Harrison Co., Iowa, Thursday 25Dec1969, pg1)
