Bio

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. Born in Albany, New York, he was the son of US Congressman Rufus Wheeler Peckham, read law in his father's office and was admitted to the bar in 1859. He was elected Albany County Attorney in 1869, Corporation Counsel to the City of Albany (1881-83), Judge to the New York Supreme Court (1883-86) and Judge to the Court of Appeals (1886-95). In 1895, President Grover Cleveland appointed him to the Supreme Court of the United States where he served until his death at age 70 in Altamont, New York.
