U.S. Congressman. Born in Albany, New York, he graduated from Union College in 1827, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1830 and commenced to practice law in Albany. He was District Attorney of Albany County, (1838-41) and elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving (1853-55). After his term, he resumed the practice of law, was Justice of the Supreme Court for the third judicial district, (1861-69) and associate Judge of the Court of Appeals from 1870, until his death at age 63. Peckham and his wife Mary, were among 226 passengers and crew of a tour steamer lost when it collided with another ship and sank just off the coast of France in the Atlantic Ocean.
