Bio

PIONEER SCOTTSBURG CITIZEN SUCCUMBS TO PHEUMONIA Funeral services were conducted from the Littell Funeral Parlors last Friday afternoon for Mrs. Sarah A. Brodt; age 88 years, who died March 28th, following an attack of pneumonia. She was the daughter of Joseph H. and Elizabeth Smith Johnston, and was born at Betheleham, Ind. She was one of Scottsburg's oldest citizens, having come here to live soon after construction of the court house was begun. She had lived for nearly 70 years within a square of where she died, living either in that house or the one across the alley, and for a short time she and her husband conducted a hotel. Her husband, Henry W. Brodt, preceeded her in death more than 20 years ago. Although physically frail, she kept an alert mind and liked to discuss people and events in her long life, and surprised many by her accurate memory. While many of her intimates friends have gone on, she had many many friends who will miss her. She is survived by three sons, Harry, of Vincennes, Frank and Fred of Scottsburg; four daughters, Mrs. Cora Henderson, Fort Smith, Arkansas; Mrs. Annice Stong, Osgood; and Florence and Clara, who live with her here. She has three surviving brothers, S.M. Johnston, of near Little York; Calvin Johnston, near Scottsburg; Henry C. Johnston, of Rock Island, Ill. Burial will be in Scottsburg Cemetery. The Chronicle Thursday, April 6, 1939
