North Bend Eagle (North Bend, Nebraska) 29 Oct 1959, Thu Page 1 Services Wednesday For James Cherny, 97 One of North Bend's oldest citizens, James Cherny, Sr., 97, died at the farm home near North Bend Sunday evening. In this life span of almost a century, Mr. Cherny saw this area from prairie to a rich farming community by the use of the crudest of hand methods in harvesting to the most complicated of power machinery. Survivors are sons, James, Jr., Fremont and Frank, North Bend; daughter, Millie, North Bend. His marriage to Marie Hines of Morse Bluff took place in 1892. She preceded him in death in 1937. Born in Chernigov, Czechoslovakia Jan. 6, 1862, he came to America with his parents at the age of nine. The family settled on a homestead near Linwood. For a time he operated a hardware store in North Bend. In 1903 he moved to a farm in the Valley Grove Community where he lived until the time of his death. Private funeral services were held at the Sellhorn Funeral Home Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. L.A. Warren officiated. Mrs. Paul Thom, accompanied by Mrs. James Arneal, sang "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "Beyond the Sunset." Pallbearers were Walter Nissen, George Wernsman, Bob Ladhoff, Alfred Allan, Bob Allan and Howard Black. Interment was in Killian Cemetery near Morse Bluff.
