Bio

Son of Damian "Tom" and Mary (Sueper) Zuerlein. Paul was the middle child and twin of nine children. He was raised in Humphrey and graduated from St. Francis High School. He followed the trade of his ancestors, a stone and brick mason. He worked with his father and brothers. Paul served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 15, 1942, until Dec. 23, 1945. He was a World War II Veteran serving in Italy, France, Germany and Austria. Medals earned included two Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, arrow head invasion South France, four Battle Stars, Presidential Citation, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Infantry Merit Badge, WWII Victory Medal, and a Distinguished Unit Badge. Paul married Esther Preister on Feb. 20, 1946, in St. Bernard Parish. He worked with his dad and brothers doing masonry work for Leo Worth, then for Zuerlein Construction Company. Paul was a postal carrier for a time and retired from Dale Electronics. He enjoyed remodeling, woodworking for family and friends, gardening and fishing. Paul was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, VFW, and the American Legion. He is survived by: Wife, Esther Zuerlein of Columbus; sister, Evelyn Gilsdorf; sister, Rosemary Preister; brother, Gerald (Loretta) Zuerlein; sister-in-law, Rosemary (Joe) Zuerlein-Moore; nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by: Parents; brothers, Tony (Leona), Mark (Margaret), Victor (Betty), Sylvester; sisters, Margaret Pfeifer; sister-in-law, Helen Zuerlein; brother-in-laws, Cyril Preister, Albert Pfeifer, and Bob Gilsdorf.
