Dorothy Mae Ambroz, 87, of Grand Island, died Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Dorothy was born Nov. 30, 1922, near Palmer to William Henry and Clara Ellen (Samuelson) Starkey. Dorothy married Paul Ambroz March 7, 1943, in Gainesville, Texas. Survivors are: sons, Jack and Jerry Ambroz, both of Grand Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David Varley of Central City; sisters, Eileen Rowe of St. Paul and Bernice Grammer of Vernal, Utah; grandsons and their wives, Travis and Kim O'Gorman, Trevor and Samantha Varley and Trenton and Renea Varley; great-grandsons, Tanner, Easton and Braiden Varley; and great-granddaughter, Taryn Varley. Dorothy lived near Palmer, Wolbach, and Farwell before moving to St. Paul. She attended St. Paul schools, graduating from St. Paul High School in 1941. After her graduation, she did babysitting and worked at Knothe Cafe. After marriage, the couple lived in St. Paul, operating the Champlin Truck Stop where Dorothy did the bookkeeping. In 1971, they moved to Lake Tahoe and then to Grand Island in 1974 where she did the bookkeeping for Ambroz Furniture. Dorothy was also a waitress at the Riverside Country Club for a number of years. In 1984, they moved to Central City where they ran Central Furniture until 1989. Dorothy enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing rummy, cooking, was famous for her cinnamon pickles and loved dancing with Paul at the American Legion dances in St. Paul. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Ambroz on Aug. 16, 2002; grandson, Tristan Varley; brother, Laverne Starkey and sisters, Leila Hansen, Lucille Graus and Betty Smith.
