Tenth of twelve children. He married Mary Ann Schmidt, daughter of Jacob Schmidt and Christina Feanser on 11 September 1907 in the German Reformed Evangelical Church in Sutton, Clay County, Nebraska. They had 2 girls - Evelyn Esther Nikolaus (1908 - 1986) and Virginia Mildred Nicholas (1912 - 1969) (FG 28768536). According to Family records, Bill and Mary lived in the summer kitchen in one of the Nicholas' family farms the first year they were married. In 1912, the family moved to Naper, Nebraska up by the Nebraska-South Dakota border so Bill could try being a rancher. This move ended up in a separation and divorce. The divorce was final in 1914 in Clay Center, Clay Co, Nebraska. Mary and the 2 girls went back south. Bill remained in Naper until 1923 when he moved to Omaha and worked until 1949. Bill worked for a time for the US Department of Labor through the W.P.A. program (1937). He also worked at the Omaha Athletic Club (elite social club) from at least 9/1938 to 2/1939 as an "ice man". His daughter, Evelyn Nickolaus Whitaker Waldren became one of the earliest female pilots taking her first lesson 1928. That was one year after Lindbergh's famous flight across the Atlantic Ocean. She broke barriers and wrote aviation history throughout her life and career.
