Helen Margaret Ritchey Hurst was born to Frank and Edith Klein Ritchey on a farm near Geneva on Jan. 26, 1913. She passed away at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont, on Feb. 15, 2002, at the age of 89 years and 19 days. She was one of nine children in the family. She attended rural school in the Geneva area until she entered high school in Geneva. The family moved to Fairmont, where she completed her high school education. Following graduation, Helen remained at home and worked at a local cafe to help out her family. In 1939, she married Harold Hurst of Fairmont, and to this union one son, Francis was born. With the exception of two short periods of time during and after World War II, when the family resided in Fremont, Helen spent her entire adult life living in Fairmont. She was devoted to her family and with each new grandchild and great-grandchild, niece or nephew, her devotion grew. Helen was a very giving individual, placing others needs ahead of her own. Her concern was with others and she needed very little for herself. She had the patience, care and concern of a Saint. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren made her life complete, and she dearly enjoyed each and every one of them. Throughout her life she also had a great love of nature. Animals, birds and pets were showered with love and attention. She took joy in watching the birds, seeing nature pictures and in spending time with each pet. Helen loved all things and all people, never having a bad thing to say about anyone. Her caring and compassionate ways endeared her to all that came to know her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Edith Ritchey; her husband, Harold H. Hurst; sisters, Lucille, Mildred and Vivian and by brothers Arthur and Earl. She is survived b her son Francis (Hub) and wife, Lyn of Fairmont, grandchildren, Melissa Hurst and husband, David Zikmund of LIncoln, Scott Hurst and wife Kumiko of Everett, Wash. and Ann Hurst of LIncoln; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Elli Hurst of Everett, Wash. and Alia Hurst of Lincoln; sisters, Merna Price and husband Dick of York and Bernice Geis of Aurora; brother, Merlin Richey and wife Gloria of Valentine; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held at the Fairmont Community Church in Fairmont on Monday, Feb. 18, with Rev. Brian Kottas officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied the congregational singing of "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace" Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Fairnont Public Cemetery.
