Bio

Bernice Geis, 87, of Benedict, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Aurora. She was born April 1, 1915 in rural Geneva to Frank and Edith (Klein)Ritchey, and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1933. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York and was an avid nature lover. She had an owl and doll collection that she was very proud of and enjoyed her family as well. On Aug. 23, 1933, she was married to Raymond McMahon at Tor. After his death, she was married to Lawrence "Short" Gries at Hebron on March 8, 1952. She is survived by three sons, Richard (Barb) McMahon of Omaha, Steve (Geannie) Geis of York and Doug (Nancy) Geis of Henderson; one daughter, Donetta (Larry ) Nye of Dannebrog; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Merlin (Gloria) Ritchey of Valentine; sister, Merna (Dick) Price of York; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, three brothers, four sisters, three grandsons, one great-grandson and two nieces. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with Father Craig Doty officiating. Following a luncheon at the church, graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Fairmont Cemetery.
