Bio

Andrew “Steve” Holecek, 38, Dies of Heart Attack Andrew W. “Steve” Holecek, 38 year-old Tours merchant, died suddenly Saturday at 6 p.m. following a severe heart attack. Rev. J. T. Geiser officiated at funeral services in St. Martin’s Church, Tours, Tuesday morning. West Veterans of Foreign War Post 4819 was in charge of graveside services. Rosary had been recited at Aderhold Chapel Monday night. Mr. Holecek was a native of Tours. He was a son of the late Andrew A. and Catherine Wolf Holecek who had operated a grocery store in Tours as far back as 55 years ago. He attended St. Martin’s School at Tours as a youth, worked in his parent’s store, and held jobs in Waco before entering Air Force service June 16, 1942. He later was transferred to the infantry and served seven months overseas in Germany before being discharged from World War II service on January 20, 1946. Upon his return home, Mr. Holecek re-opened the family store closed during the war due to lack of help, and operated it as sole owner along with his wife, the former Georgia Halamik, until the day of his death. Mr. Holecek was a member of the West VFW Post, and St. Martin’s Society at Tours. He was well-known for his baseball playing ability all over Central Texas. He caught for the Tours Tigers and Henderson’s Grill semi-pro clubs before the war. He was an all-star catcher for the Henderson team that swept three Central Texas semi-pro titles. He also played on West teams in the post-war West softball league. His nickname “Steve” came from the diamond when fans originally dubbed him “Stiff” describing the way he carried his angular frame. Mr. Holecek felt ill a week before his death but had been well enough to visit West earlier in the morning on the day of his sudden death. He died at his store home. Survivors include his widow of Tours, four brothers, Lawrence Holecek of Tours, Joe Holecek of Baytown, Victor Holecek of Austin and Roman Holecek of San Jose, Calif., three sisters, Mrs. John Jupe of Tours, Miss Hattie Holecek of Santa Ana, Calif., and Miss Christine Holecek of Waco. Pallbearers were Frankie Wachsman, Eddy Dulock, Fred Grimm, Bill Vrba, Tom Hlavenka, and Andrew Schroeder.
