Elsie F. Mares, 91, of North Bend, formerly of Schuyler, died Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Fremont Area Medical Center. She was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Prague to James and Emma (Virka) Fencl. She grew up in Prague and in 1937 moved to a farm northeast of North Bend. She married Max Satorie on Sept. 8, 1937. He died Jan. 28, 1947. She then married Ralph Westphalen in 1948. He later died. She married Alvin Mares on March 25, 1958, in Columbus. They couple lived in rural North Bend until moving into North Bend in 1988. Alvin died June 14, 1991. She moved to Schuyler in August 1999. She had been residing at Birchwood Manor in North Bend since 2006. She worked at the former Campbell Soup Co. in Fremont for several years. She also worked at the North Bend Locker Plant, the former Blevins Popcorn Co. and the Corner Cafe, both at North Bend, and worked as a cook at School District 93 in rural North Bend. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8223 Auxiliary at North Bend. Survivors include: two sons, James M. (and wife, Connie) Satorie of Morse Bluff and David (and wife, Sharon) Westphalen of Schuyler; a daughter, Gloria Wnek of Phoenix; three half brothers, James (and wife, Ruby) Fencl and Arnold (and wife, Helen) Fencl, all of Elkhorn, and Leonard (and wife, Helen) Fencl of Linwood; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister.
