Frances was the 4th child born to Maj. Peter Edwards and Mary Salmon; Sarah Young, Elizabeth, Harriet Salmon, Frances Wycliffe, Mary Ann McClanahan and Eliza William Edwards. She was the wife of Gov. Oran Milo Roberts, Sr. and the mother of 7 children; Sarah Jane, Oba, Robert Pinckney, Margaret Eliza, Peter, Una Frances and Oran Milo Roberts, Jr. Her father, Peter Edwards, was one of many heirs to the famous/infamous "Edwards 'Mis'Fortune."
