Willie R. Crawley, 78, a prominent farmer of the Loco community for almost 60 years, and a leader in that part of the county died in St. Joseph's Hospital early Saturday, April 5. His death came after a long period of ill health, although he remained active until only a short time ago. Eight years ago, after his health had begun to fail, he and Mrs. Crawley left the community to which they had given so much time and devoted work, to make their home at 1401 Bowie Street in Wellington. Mr. Crawley came with his father, the late G.H. Crawley and family, to this area in 1909, and he stepped immediately in the responsibilities of helping develop that rich agricultural area. He was always active in the church and school, although he had no children of his own He watched the many changed that took place in those institutions in the rural areas of the Southeast Panhandle. Mr. Crawley had been a Methodist since early life. He was born at Gravelly, Arkansas, May 18, 1890. He spent his childhood there and moved with his parents to Mt. Pleasant, Texas, just after the turn of the century. A few years later the family moved to Lane community near Tulia before choosing the Southeast Panhandle for their home. He was married to Miss Mable Devenport on January 18, 1914. Funeral services were conducted at First United Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, with the Rev. R.T. Dyess, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kelso Funeral Home. Pallbearers were nephews and included J.B. Killian, A.V. Lowrie, M.D. Gunstream, Dean Devenport, Ted Dunavant, and Lindal Martin. Mr. Crawley is survived by his wife of Wellington and three sisters, Mrs. J.A. Killian of Wellington, Mrs. O.M. Gunstream of Memphis, and Mrs. Mrs. H.I Magatagan of Artesia, New Mexico. A brother, R.R. Crawley, died March 12. Wellington leader Provided by Angie Mitchell Martin
