He was born in Bohlenberge, Germany and came to America with his father, Johann, mother Geske, brothers Wilhelm and Diedrich, sister Margaretha and fiancee', Margarethe Carstens in 1861. They joined his brothers Friedrich & Gerhard, who had made the journey a few years earlier and settled in Eureka, Il. Herman and Margarethe were married on July 27, 1861. His father died on Dec. 13, 1862 and his mother died on February 24, 1865. After the deaths of their parents, Herman, Gerhard and a neighbor, Henry VonLindern, along with their families left Illinois and settled south of Milford, Ne. on land purchased from a railway company. In 1879, the three families resold their ground to the railroad and moved to a new community that became Bruning, Ne. in 1887. Herman & Margarethe's children who survived infancy were Gesine 1862), Margarete (1869), John H.(1872), George P. (1874), Wilhemina (1878), and Friedrich W. (1881)
