In the spring of 1861, Johann Herman Bruening and Geske Margarette Prulrocken Bruening, son, Herman (age 29) Wilhelm (age 20) and Diedrich Frank (age 11) and daughter, Margaretha and niece Margaretha Carstens (the promised wife of Herman) left the old home in May for the U.S.A. They were 9 weeks and 3 days on the water in one of the early-day sailing vessels. During the month of June, they were stranded for two weeks between icebergs in the ocean with 300 people on board. They landed in New York the fore part of July, 1861 and from there they journeyed to Eureka, Illinois, where they joined Friedrich and Gerhard, the two sons, who preceded them on the journey. Father, Johann Herman Bruening died at Walnut Grove, Ill., on Dec. 13, 1862. Mother Geske Margarette Prulrocken Bruening died also at Walnut Grove, Ill. on Feb. 24, 1865. They came from Bohlenberge bei Zetel, Oldenburg, Germany. The Bruening name has been changed to Bruning thru the years. -------------------------
