Born 26 September 1916 in Dallas, TX to John Thomas Nichols and Mary Annie Sanders, Marvin resided in Western Heights until age twelve, when his mother died at the young age of forty-one. As a teen, he worked as a caddie at Dallas Country Club, and soon developed a lifelong passion for the sport. He had one sister and four brothers -- Nellie Mae Nichols Wilson, John Thomas Nichols (Johnnie), Willie Lee Nichols (Bill), Loyed Nichols and Joe Earl Nichols. He also had half siblings -- A.J. Nichols, Louella Estelle Nichols Horton, Anna Fae Nichols Keenum and Wanda Lou Nichols York, by his step-mother Elsie. In 1935, he married Zona Noble from Limestone County, TX and they produced one child, Joyce Joann in 1936, splitting up shortly thereafter while Marvin served in the US Navy. Marvin sailed the Pacific during WWII, serving as a Seabee mechanic and excavator. After his service in the Construction Battalion, he worked heavy equipment and road building until his retirement in the mid-1970's. He and his second wife Mary "Mamie" Davis were Baptist churchmembers in Granbury, TX, where he had built his stone home and raised livestock and vegetables. He died at age 72 of cancer in 1989.
