Wood River, Jan. 14. - Owen Curry was born July 5, 1844, in County Cavin(sic), Ireland and came to America in 1865. He enlisted for war at Elmira, New York, in Company I, 27th infantry for one year and then in the 9th infantry for two years when he received a (illegible) discharge. During this time he fought Indians through the Dakotas and Montana, coming to Nebraska in 1868. He began railroading as a section man with Patrick Brett and Martin Brett at Overton. He also worked at Kearney and Willow Island as section man. He was married to Katie Haverty, August 20, 1871, but Father Ryan at the old church where Wood River was formerly located, living in the section house at Kearney until 1873. At that time he came to Wood River, taking up a homestead of 160 acres where he lived continuously until June 2, 1914, when he moved to town. There were eight children born to this union, the oldest boy, James, preceded him in death some three years ago. He leaves a wife and children as follows: Mrs. Mamie O'Brien and Mrs. Delia Matoon of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Knight of Oregon City, John of Lexington, Mrs. Fannie Wickersham of Wood River, Teresa and Anna Curry of Wood River, also one sister, Mrs. Patrick Gooden, of County Cavin, Ireland. He received the first marriage license issued by Paddy Walsh, county judge of Buffalo county. He also received the license from Hall county. Mr. Curry was held in high esteem by all and had made himself and family a great amount of this world's goods. Up to the time of his death he owned some two sections of Wood River valley's best land besides interests in the west and personal property. The funeral took place at the residence at 2 o'clock today and at the Catholic cemetery, Rev. Father Lynch officiating. The pallbearers were H. F. Eaton, H. E. Trout, Jas. Greenwood, J. C. Owen Curry, one of the oldest and most prominent residents in the west end of Hall county, passed away at his home last Monday. Mr. Curry was for years one of the best known men in the west end and in his years of toil has become very wealthy. It was not many weeks ago that he made a visit to Grand Island. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at two o'clock.
