Dorothy (Pavlas) Zahirniak, age 89, of West, passed away late Sunday evening, January 27, 2019 at West Rest Haven. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2019, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Rev. Timothy Vaverek as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Dorothy was born on June 23, 1929, the daughter of Anton and Lillian (Hodanek) Pavlas. She attended school in Abbott. On April 25, 1949, Dorothy was united in marriage to Joe Edward Zahirniak in West. Joe preceded her in death on September 28, 2007. She worked as a cook for West ISD for 22 years until retiring in 1998. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, raising her grandchildren, her dog Christmas, Czech music and dancing, working outside, and especially spending time with her family. Dorothy is also preceded in death by two daughters, Connie Drews and Lauri Zahirniak; a son, Chuck Zahirniak; her parents; sisters, Edna Sharp, Esther Vrana, and Maxine Bonge; and brothers, Fred Pavlas and John Joe Pavlas. Survivors include two sons, Edward "Zork" Zahirniak and wife Sherry, and William "Bill" Zahirniak, all of West; two daughters, Donna Adair and husband Dennis of Lorena, and Mary Kaska and husband Richard of West; 9 grandchildren, Dylan Berger, Renee Lynch and husband Choice, Amber Zahirniak, Zac Zahirniak and wife Nikki, Ronald Petter, Kimberly Epps and husband Scott, Andrea Hooker and husband Jerry, Kristie Mason and husband Sam, and Sherry Alligood and husband Jay; 17 great-grandchildren, Joey and Morgan Petter, Meagan, Amber, and Kimberly Hooker, Olivia Epps, Landon Edwards, Adalynn Hill, Gavin and Grayson Lynch, Brooklyn, and Brynlee Zahirniak, Coy and Riley Schier, Jillian Mason, and Ashley and Ty Alligood; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
