Bio

Harry Lichnovsky, age 88, of West passed away early Friday morning, September 3, 2004, at West Rest Haven. Following the visitation at Kotch Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 5, 2004, family and friends participated in a Scriptural Rosary Service. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Military graveside rites, conducted by V.F.W. Post #4819 followed at St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mr. Lichnovsky was born on October 26, 1915, at Rogers Hill in McLennan County, the son of Frank W. and Annie (Hutyra) Lichnovsky. He married Bessie Bezdek on May 21, 1940. After moving to West from Kemp, Texas, in 1929, the Lichnovsky family began the legacy of Lichnovsky Grocery. At the age of 13, Harry began his full time involvement with the family business. He owned and operated Lichnovsky Grocery with his dad and later his son for almost 60 years. He was a member of Texas Retail Grocers Association. During World War II, Harry served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st class stationed in Corpus Christi and aboard the USS Seadevil, USS New Jersey, and USS Quincy. He was a member of VFW Post #4819 and American Legion Post #478. Harry had been a charter member and director of the West Chamber of Commerce and a charter member of Westfest. He was an active member of the Catholic Church of the Assumption. Harry held offices in St. Joseph's K.J.T. Society #31, West Knights of Columbus, and 50-50 Club. He was a participant in the K of C choir. Harry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bessie, on June 20, 2003, after 63 years of marriage. Above all, Harry loved his family and friends and enjoyed visiting with them. Kotch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The West News, West, Texas, Thursday, September 15, 2004
