Bio

Hattie Kolar Kocian, age 94 of West, passed away Monday evening, January 8, 2001 in a Waco hospital. Rosary was recited at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:15 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mrs. Kocian was born February 14, 1906 in Brocken (Hill County) and had lived in the Hill-McLennan counties all her life. She was a homemaker, cook and manager of the West Elementary School cafeteria from 1951 to 1954. She was instrumental in starting the first Czech bakery with partners Hattie Lednicky and W.O. Montgomery in 1955 in West. She loved to have family gatherings and cooking for all. She took pride in keeping her yard and flowers and loved to play dominos and Taroky. Mrs. Kocian was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, the Catholic Daughters of America Sacred Heart Court 829 and KI.J.Z.T. Society No. 11. She was preceded in death by two sons, Raymond Kocian and Ted Kocian and two brothers, Leo and Ben Kolar. Survivors include one son, Joe J. Kocian and his wife Dorothy of Lacy-Lakeview; one daughter-in-law, Josephine Kocian of West; one brother, Joe R. Kolar of Houston; three sisters, Emily Horsak of West, Willie Mae Vavra of Ennis and Irene Cmelka of Huntsville; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Active Pallbearers were Teddy Kocian, Randy Kocian, Mario Scorza, Mike Kocian, Rick Russell and Richard Gonzalez. Kotch Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.
