Memorial Services For Sgt. J. Karlik Here On Tuesday Memorial services for Staff Sgt. Jerry J. Karlik, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Karlik of this city, who was killed in action in the Philippine Islands, will be held here at the Catholic church at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10th. Rev. E.J. Polcak will conduct the services. Born in the midst of World War I, during May 1918, Sgt. Karlik was killed with other heroes of General MacArthur's illustrious warriors who are defending this country in the Philippines. He was the first victim of World War II from this city and the entire community will join in paying tribute to a beloved citizen and true hero . All members of Company A, Texas Defense Guard will attend the memorial service. The Company will march to the Catholic church in uniform, thus paying respect and supplying a military atmosphere for the final services honoring West's first hero of the second World War. Karlik, who was killed at the outbreak of World War II were held here at the Catholic Church Sunday afternoon. Military services were conducted at the Catholic Cemetery by a squad from Connally Air Base and the West American Legion Post. The church was filled to capacity as friends and relatives paid their last respects to West's first war victim. Sgt. Karlik enlisted in Waco at the age of 17, and was stationed at Marfa and San Antonio before going overseas in October 1941. He was killed on February 8, 1942 at the age of 23. Surviving are his father, J.C. Karlik of West; his mother, Mrs. Stacy Karlik Kazda of West; two brothers, Clement Karlik of Fort Worth and Wilford Karlik of West.
