Leander Hoelscher Memorial services for Pfc. Leander (Dick) Hoelscher, who was killed in action on Okinawa on June 5 were held at the Church of the Assumption in West at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, July 12, with Rev. E.J. Polcak officiating. Word of the death of Pfc. Hoelscher reached his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Hoelscher, last week. The report stated that he was killed in the final stages of the furious fighting at Okinawa Island. The nineteen-year-old infantryman was inducted into the service at Ft. Sam Houston on September 15, 1944. He received basic training at Camp Hood for three months, spent a short furlough at home, and was then shipped overseas via Ft. Ord, California. He spent one month on the Hawaiian Islands, and was then shipped to Okinawa, where he arrived on May 12. At the time of his death he was attached to the 7th Infantry Division of the 10th Army. Born in this community, Pfc. Hoelscher attended Tokio school, graduating shortly before entering the service. He was chosen star player of the 1941-42 basketball team. Two of his brothers were also members of the army. Robert Hoelscher received an honorable discharge after serving with the army two years. O.F. Hoelscher, still a member of the army, is now stationed at the San Marcos Navigation School. Other survivors are his six sisters, Mrs. M.J. Glatter, Tours, Mrs. Wm. Berger, Tours, Mrs. J.C. Moelen, Lott, Mrs. E.H. Miller, Waco, and Misses Elsie and Mary Hoelscher of West and Waco, respectively. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 56, No. 8, Edition 1, Friday, July 13, 1945, page 1.
