Alphonse Grellhesl Killed by Auto; First 1940 Traffic Victim in County Accident Occurs On Hiway Near City; Waco Man Driver Of Vehicle Alphonse Grellhesl, age 21, resident of this community, was instantly killed at 9:15 p.m. Saturday when he was struck down by an automobile driven by E. R. Finley, Waco, one and one-half miles north of West on the Dallas highway. His death marked the first 1940 traffic fatality in McLennan County. According to Jim Holland, who was with Grellhesl at the time of the accident, they were walking north on the right side of the pavement. The motorist was traveling southward and in passing another vehicle struck the pedestrian. Finley stated that his car was upon young Grellhesl before he saw him. Holland was uninjured. The body was brought to the local undertaking establishment by a West ambulance. Justice of the Peace Louis Garrison entered an inquest verdict of death by accident and indicated no blame was attached to Finley. However, further investigation may be necessary as relatives are of a different opinion. The fatal accident came two days ahead of the first traffic fatality of 1939. Funeral services were held from the Catholic church here at 9 a.m. Monday, Rev. E.J. Polcak officiating, burial in the Catholic cemetery.
