John Lee Gerik Dies Suddenly At N.Y. Home Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 17 for John Lee Gerik, 36, who died suddenly at his home in Hicksville, Long Island, New York, on Saturday afternoon, April 12. Services were held at the Church of Assumption in West, Rev. W. Buckholts officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary was recited Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Aderhold-Moore Chapel. Mr. Gerik had not been ill. He complained of not feeling well after lunch Saturday, and sat down to rest. He died of a heart attack a few minutes later. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Gerik of West. He was born in West on August 30, 1921. He was a West High School graduate. In high school he was an outstanding athlete, participating in both football and basketball. He attended the University of Texas after graduation from West High School until he joined the Air Corps. He served for 3 1/2 years during World War II in the European theater. He flew over 40 missions from England to Germany, and was shot down once. He was an engineer in the Air Corps and held the rank of Technical Sergeant. After he received his discharge he returned to West and in 1946 went to work for the Veterans Administration. He was married to the former Miss Jo Ann Smaistrla, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smaistrla of West. They had five children, John Lee, Jr., 10, Thomas, 9, Phillip, 8, Karen Ann, 3, and Michael, 10 months. They made their home in West for several years, and were then transferred to Dallas. Some five years ago, they were transferred to New York State. He was the supply officer at Brooklyn Veterans Hospital, New York. Mr. Gerik was a member of the West Knights of Columbus Lodge, and other organizations in New York. He is survived by his widow, five, children, his parents, and a brother, Alfred E. Gerik of West. Pallbearers were Ad. Muska, Jr., Amos Cocek, Jerry Cocek, Robert Prikryl, Jessie Devers and Ollie Kubacak. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 67, No. 50, Edition 1, Friday, April 18, 1958, page 1.
