Longtime West priest dies Monday in Waco The Reverend Monsignor George E. Doskocil, age 74 and Pastor Emeritus at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, passed away June 14, 1993 at Providence Health Center in Waco. A Rosary is to be recited at 7:30 p.m. today (Thursday) in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. His body will lie in state at the church from 8 a.m. until after the Rosary on Thursday and from 8 a.m. until the Funeral on Friday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at II a.m. Friday in the Church of the Assumption with the Most Reverend John E. McCarthy, Bishop of Austin, as celebrant, and brother priests of the diocese of Austin and priest friends of Msgr. Doskocil as co-celebrants. Burial will be in Mary's Cemetery. Msgr. Doskocil was born November 13, 1918, about 12 miles east of Temple in the small community of Cyclone. George Doskocil was the oldest of 13 children. He was the son of Edward Frank Doskocil and Antonia (Sula) Doskocil. He attended public schools through his second year of high school. Then his high school, college and seminary education was completed at St. Mary's Seminary in LaPorte. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on May 17, 1942 and his first assignment was to St. Mary's Parish in Houston. In December 1942, he was appointed assistant to Msgr. Joseph Kune in East Bernard and at the same time placed in charge of the mission church in Beasley, Texas. In June 1945, he was appointed assistant pastor to Father Edward Polcak in West and served in this capacity until Father Polcak's death in 1955. At that time, he was appointed Administrator of Assumption Parish, a position he held until 1957. Much of his responsibility during this time was to work for the completion of the church building begun in 1954. From 1948, when the Diocese of Austin was established until 1957, Father Doskocil served as the first diocesan director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD). He also served on the diocesan matrimonial court from 1957 until 1965. After serving as pastor in Cornhill from 1957 to 1963 and in Granger from 1963 to 1965, Father Doskocil returned to West as pastor of the Assumption Parish in December 1965 and continued tp serve in that capacity until July 1982 when he was named Pastor Emeritus of the West Parish. In 1980, the Most Rev. Vincent Harris, Bishop of the Austin Diocese, informed Father Doskocil that he had been elevated by Pope John Paul II to domestic Prelate with the title of Monsignor. Msgr. Doskocil celebrated the Golden Jubilee of his priesthood in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration of Assumption Parish on May 17,1992. Monsignor Doskocil was associated with the following organizations: Knights of Columbus Council #2305 of West (Past chaplain and member); Catholic Daughters of America #829 (Chaplain); KJ.T. #31 (Past Chaplain and member); K.J.Z.T. #11 (Chaplain); 50-50 Club (member and Chaplain); St. Anne's Altar Society (Past chaplain); and K.D. (Catholic Workman) (Chaplain and member). He was a loyal supporter of St. Mary's School, SL Mary's School Board, St. Mary's Parent-Teacher Club, and St. Mary's Quarterback Club. He is survived by: four brothers, John Doskocil and Ben Doskocil, both of Arlington, Clarence Doskocil of Mansfield and Anthony Doskocil of Temple; three sisters, Mary Ann Hoelscher of Cyclone, Martha Straccner of Arlington and Sister Rose Ann Doskocil of Houston. Active pallbearers are his Nephews. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's School Endowment Trust Fund or the Church of the Assumption Rectory Renovation Project Kotch Funeral Home in West is in charge of arrangements.
