Bio

John Wilson Rogers II moved his family from Somervell County, Texas to Ft. Bend County, Texas during the winter of 1893 - 1894 with the rest of the Griggs/Woodard and allied families. The following is taken from a family history letter written by the late family historian Myra Davis Banfield Dippel and sent to family members in the 1980's: "Uncle Bob (Robert Grigg Lee…1869-1947) was an avid reader… he read the ads the south Texas land promoters had put out trying to attract buyers in the gulf coast area… he read these and they were so inviting… he said he really got "the fever". He finally convinced our grandmother that they should sell the Somervell County land and move to south Texas where there was rich farm land that offered a much brighter future. "When the Somervell land was sold they had 4 wagons with horses for the big move. Aunt Nannie who had married JOHN ROGERS took one wagon… Uncle Bob and Aunt Lizzie took another wagon and Aunt Mattie and Uncle Harry Conkin took the 3rd wagon. Our grandparents and the 4 Grigg children rode in the 4th wagon. My mother Sabra Grigg was almost 3 years old at the time. Uncle George Grigg was born in Milam County on the way to south Texas. Aunt Ida had married Lee Kimmel and they remained in the Somervell area. Uncle Walter the oldest boy in the Woodard family probably stayed with Woodard relatives in the area. "Uncle Bob said that when they arrived in Fort Bend County he thought that was the prettiest country he had ever seen but the literature he had been reading was about the Alvin, Texas area so they drove on to that country. It did not look as good to them as the Fort Bend area. They returned to the Rosenberg area and bought a farm where the Cottonwood School used to be."
