OBITUARY: Wednesday, January 26, 2005 - Sioux City Journal, Sioux City, Iowa Gertie M. Bates, 103, of David City, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at St. Joseph Villa in David City. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Tim Blanchard officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. Gertie May Bates was born Aug. 6, 1901, in Vermillion, S.D., the daughter of Joseph and Gertie (Washburn) Coverdale. She was raised in Vermillion and attended school there, graduating from Vermillion High School. She lived in Vermillion for several years. He married Lester F. Bates in March 1921. The couple lived in Sioux City for many years. She was a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for many years in Sioux City, retiring about 30 years ago. She had lived in Omaha for seven years before moving to David City to be near her daughter. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church while in Sioux City and kept her membership with the church even after moving away. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert and Marilyn Bates of Des Moines and Gerald and Barbara Bates of Decatur, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Elaine and Emil Navrkal of David City; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Howard; and a sister, May Hubert. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Jerard Powell, Craig Navrkal, Bryan Meister, Brandon Meister, Brett Schmit and Kevin Navrkal. Honorary pallbearers will be Troy Thomm, Todd Thomm, Chris Story, B.J. Stasty and Ryan Stasty.
