Bio

Howard Bates Died February 22, 2002 Howard Bates was born on July 22, 1922, in Vermillion, SD, to Lester and Gertie (Coverdale) Bates. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1941, and then entered the U.S. Army. He proudly served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. While serving he received many ribbons, medals, and citations including the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, 3 overseas service bars, and 1 Bronze Star on Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. Following his discharge from service in 1945, he began his employment with N.W. Bell Telephone Company as a Forecast Engineer and served most of his career as a Engineer Supervisor. He married Julia Cahoy on December 27, 1947, at Sioux City, IA. He continued working with N.W. Bell in Omaha, central South Dakota, and Sioux Falls. Following his retirement in 1981, the couple lived in Tennessee and Florida. They recently had returned to Sioux Falls. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as an usher and taught Sunday School classes, was a past master of the Minnehaha Blue Lodge #5, Past Master of York Rite Bodies, Lt. In the El Riad Shrine, Legion of Honor Foot Patrol, Life Member of the VFW, and longtime member of the American Legion. In his free time, he enjoyed painting, golf, and boating. Howard unselfishly dedicated his life to his children. Throughout their growing years, he often sacrificed much of his own life to provide for his daughters. He was an inspirational father and cherished time with his family. Passionate, caring and grateful, Howard's free spirit will be well missed. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Julia Bates, Sioux Falls, SD, daughters, Janice Owen and her husband, Park, Powell, TN, Robin Gartzke and her husband, Gary, Sioux Falls, SD, grandchildren, Brooke Owen, Shawn Owen, Preston Gartzke and Cameron Gartzke, his mother, Gerte Bates, David City, NE, brothers, Robert Bates and his wife, Marilyn, Des Moines, IA, Gerald Bates and his wife, Barb, Decatur, NE, sister, Elaine Navrkal and her husband, Emil, Alamo, TX, his aunt, May Hubert, Sioux Falls, SD, and his four legged buddy, Princess.
