obit: Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home & Crematory, Phone: (712) 322-7779, 545 Willow Avenue, Council Bluffs, IA 51503 Gerald W. Bates, age 91, of Decatur, Nebraska, formerly of Council Bluffs, passed away February 7, 2022 at Mercy Hospital. Gerald was born October 29, 1930 in Vermillion, South Dakota to the late Lester and Gertie (Coverdale) Bates. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Gerald was a courier for Purolator for 30 years retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge; American Legion Post #215, where he served on the Honor Detail and Veterans of Foreign War. In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his stepson, Danny Gatewood; step granddaughter, Stephanie Dahl; brother, Howard and sister, Elaine Navrkal. Gerald is survived by his wife of 25 years, Barbara Bates of Decatur; daughters, Becky (Don) Fisher, Rita (Rick) Flom all of Council Bluffs; grandchildren, Matt, Chris, Jared, and Michaela; great grandchildren, Braxton, Jayden, Rylan and Olivia; brother, Robert (Marilyn) Bates of Des Moines, Iowa; stepchildren, Diane, Peggy, and Becky; many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial service, Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Church of Freedom, 701 South 4th St. in Council Bluffs. Military rites will be tendered by the American Legion Post #2. A lunch will follow the service in the church hall. Inurnment will be held later in the Decatur, Nebraska Cemetery. The family will direct memorials.
