After graduating from high school with a teaching certificate, she taught school for two years. During that time she met her husband, Louie Joseph Kucera. After her husband's death in 1967, she worked as a nurse's aid to help support her family. In 1971, she met and married her second husband, Harold Floyd Covel. The couple enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and being part of an extended family. Following Harold's death in 1981, she was involved in quilting, and volunteering at the Scappoose Senior Center Thrift Store.
