Lena Sund, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Sund was born in Pomerania Germany, September 4, 1866 and departed this life at Burr Oak, Kansas, December 12, 1950 at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 9 days. She came with her parents from Germany in 1870 and for a number of years resided at Thornton, Illinois coming later to Jewell County. On October 3, 1885 she was united in marriage to John Karnatz and to this union were born eight children, Minnie, Charles, Rosa, Otto, Ernest, Eddie, Effie and Walter. Four of the children preceded her in death. Minnie and Rosa in infancy and Charles and Eddy gave their lives in the defense of their country in World War I. After their marriage they lived on a homestead 8 miles north and 2 miles west of Burr Oak. Later they moved to St Francis, Kansas and in 1898 they returned to Jewell County on a farm north of Burr Oak where they resided until two years ago and since that time have been residents of Burr Oak. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, John Karnatz of Burr Oak, four children, Otto and Walter Karnatz and Effie Morris of Burr Oak, Ernest Karnatz of Guide Rock; two brothers Fred Sund of Superior and Charles Sund of Guide Rock; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren and other relatives and a host of neighbors and friends. She gave her heart to the Lord early in life and lived a consistent Christian. Was a member of the Wesley Center Church and very active in all the work until her passing. Services were held Saturday, December 16, 1950 at the Nazarene Church with Rev Archie Harris and Rev M E Walden officiating. Music was furnished by a quartette composed of Marian McNichols, Alfred Craighead, Esther Patnode and Clell Hancock, accompanied by Mrs Clell Hancock. The pallbearers were Loren Roberson, Delbert Kiehl, Clifford Cornter, Wm Yetter, Elton Gillett and Ralph Billinwilms. Interment was in the Burr Oak cemetery. The Walter Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
