The funeral of Mrs Mary Sund was held last Thursday afternoon at the home of her brother, Charles Karnatz, conducted by Rev George Bancroft and burial made in the Shaffer Cemetery. Mary Karnatz was born in Germany April 25, 1829. She was united in marriage with John Sund in 1860 and came to America in 1871, settling in Cook county, Ill. They lived there until 1879, moving to Jewell County where they lived for 35 years before the death of her husband which occurred in 1914. Mrs Sund continued to live on the old homestead until within two days of her death, which occurred at the home of her only brother Charles Karnatz, on Aug 29, 1916 at the age of 87 years and 4 month. Five children were born to Mr & Mrs Sund, three girls and two boys, Hannah Weigel of Guide Rock, Mary Indorf, Lena Karnatz and Fred and Charles Sund of Burr Oak. They were all present at the time of their mothers' death except Mary Indorf, who died at St Francis, Kansas in 1896. There are 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Mrs Sund was a faithful attendant at the German services when she could attend, but could not understand any English.
