The Clay County Sun (Clay Center, NE), Thursday, May 13, 1920; pg. 1 HERBECK (sic) - SKALKA One of the most distinguished social events that ever occured (sic) in this county took place at the beautiful farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kalvoda, near Spring Ranch, in celebration of the wedding of their daughter, Miss Carre (sic) Herbeck (sic) to Mr. Emil Skalka, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Skalka of the same neighborhood. The marriage ceremony was solemnized at the West Deweese Catholic church and from the church the wedding party went in gaily decorated autos to the Kalvoda home where a magnificent wedding dinner was served to nearly five hundred guests. After dinner the wedding party led the way to the handsome dance pavilion especially erected for the occasion and the Deweese Military band under the direction of Prof. John Soucheck sounded the opening strains of a waltz. On entering the hall the bride with five attendants had taken places on one side of the room and the groom with his five attendants on the opposite side. As the band started, the groom's brother left his side and crossed to where the bride's party was stationed. He selected the bride and waltzed around to where the groom was standing where he gave her to her life partner. The same ceremony was performed with each of the bridesmaids had been given to a groomsman maids had been given to a groomsman and then the dancing became general. The dancing and good fellowship continued to a late hour and never did a young couple start life in this county with more sincere wishes for their future prosperity and happiness than did Mr. and Mrs. Emil Skalka. The groom's father presented the young couple with one of the best quarter sections of land in the county as a wedding present and at the close of the wedding festivities the groom took his bride to the splendid new home prepared for her reception. The brde (sic) is one of the most popular girls in the community where she has spent the larger part of her life and the groom is one of the solid young men of South Clay. A bright future seems assured Mr. and Mrs. Skalka and it is the sincere wish of The Sun that no cloud may come to mar these prospects.
