The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, March 31, 1949; pg. 1 Collapse of Cave Kills Ernest Karmazin At Home Wednesday Artificial Respiration Fails To Save Life of '48 Nelson Graduate Ernest J. Karmazin, about 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Karmazin of Deweese, was killed Wednesday morning about 11 o'clock when he was caught in the collapse of a small cave at their farm home six miles north and three and a half west of here. Young Karmazin was engaged with his father in making some repairs on the inside of the brick cave made necessary by a leaky drain pipe. The collapse of the cave roof buried the son under the failing brick and earth, while Mr. Karmazin, apparently nearer the cave door, was pinned only by the feet and legs. Mrs. Karmazin was able to help free her husband after which Albert Mazour, a farm neighbor, was called for help, with Joe Mazour arriving moments later. Mr. Herbek estimated that it must have been nearly 30 minutes after the cave-in before they were able to remove the boy from the floor of the cave. Both Dr. J.E. Ingram of Nelson and Dr. O.S. Gray of Lawrence attended the youth and the Nelson Firemen with the departments inhalator worked for close to 30 minutes in efforts to revive him. Asphyxiation was given as the probable cause of death. Surviving in the immediate family besides his mother and father is an older sister, Dorothy, also at home. Ernest graduated from Nelson school in the class of 1948. ================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, April 7, 1949 Ernest J.
