Bio

DELLA MINNIE NAIVAR KOCUREK 1906-2000 Funeral services for Della Minnie Naivar Kocurek, 94, of Burleson were held Saturday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Rosenberg, Texas. Burial was at Morton Cemetery in Richmond, Texas. Mrs. Kocurek died Tuesday, October 10, 2000, in Fort Worth. She was born March 18, 1906, in Vox Populii, Texas, near Cat Springs, to John Josef Naivar and Frances Frnka Naivar. They moved from Cat Springs to Ratibor, near Temple, where she attended Lost Prairie School (and even stayed on to teach sixth grade.) Her parents farmed and had a mercantile store. Della came to Rosenberg where her sister Carrie lived, and she worked as a waitress at the "Harvey House" by the railroad. She met and fell in love with Willie Albin Kocurek. They married on January 6, 1929. Della attended the Buddy Benz School of Floral Design in Houston, as did three daughters and one granddaughter. She was blessed with green thumbs and won many blue ribbons at the Fort Bend County Fair. She and Bill started Kocureks Flower Shop in 1950. After both retired in 1970, Della and Bill moved to Jewett, Texas to raise cattle. Bill passed away in 1986, but Della remained there with the garden, cattle, guineas, ducks and turkeys. She especially loved her family, fishing on her own lake, watching football, collecting salt and pepper shakers, gardening, flowers, playing 42, cooking, baking and reading. Although she attended the Rosenberg Brethren Church in Rosenberg, they attended the First United Methodist Church in Jewett, Texas since 1970. Della remained at the farm until 1994, when she moved to Kateland Square in Richmond, Texas, and later to Stonegate Nursing Center in Fort Worth. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August, 2000. She passed away peacefully Tuesday night, October 10, 2000. Mrs. Kocurek was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Bill; her brothers and sisters, Albin Naivar, Annie Vasicek, Matilda Sodek, Mary Talasek, Carrie Talasek, Frank Naivar, Ed Naivar, and siblings Johnny and Ema who died as children. She is survived by children, Frances Wheat and husband, Gene, of Burleson, Joyce Brooks and husband, Jon, of Lewisville, William Kocurek and wife, Mary Jane, of Richmond, Marvin Kocurek and wife, Esther, of Anchorage, Alaska, Jane Hill and husband, Glen, of Richmond, Alice Kocurek of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Conway Wheat and wife, Connie, Janet Payne and husband, Hoby, Chris Ward, Sabrina Ward, Eric Kocurek and wife, Jennifer, Omar Kocurek; great-grandchildren, Ryan Payne, Jon Wheat, Kamella Wheat, Devin Ward, Taylor Payne; sister-in-law, Elsie Bobo of New Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews.
