Bio

William John Kocurek, age 76, of Richmond, Texas died Thursday, November 2, 2006, at the hospital in Fairfield following a heart attack. Born January 15, 1930 in Rosenberg, Texas, he was the son of Willie Albin Kocurek and Della Naivar Kocurek. As a young boy he learned the value of hard work delivering clean laundry for his mother. During the Depression era he sold newspapers for a penny each and sold honey from his own hives. He acquired his business savvy while working for Melvin Daily in downtown Rosenberg. As a teenager he was very proud of the boat he built and used for fishing. He played the clarinet in the high school band and graduated from Rosenberg High School in 1947. He then attended Texas A&M University where he graduated third in his class of 1951. He also holds a Phi Beta Kappa Key. After graduation William entered the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. Twice he was named Airman of the Month. During his life he owned and operated a plant nursery, pest control business, a fence company, a donut shop, and his ranch. He traveled the world on hunting trips to such destinations as Alaska, New Zealand, and Slovakia. He always returned with gifts for his wife, Mary Jane, his mother and his four sisters. He had many loves including his family, Czech music, dogs, Blue Bell ice cream, football, plants and flowers, travel, shopping and making videotapes. He was active in the VFW, Czech Heritage Society, and Taxpayers Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Mary Jane Kubelka Kocurek; brother Marvin Kocurek of Anchorage, AK; sisters: Frances Kocurek Wheat and husband, Gene, of Burleson; Jane Kocurek Hill and husband, Glen, of Snook; Joyce Kocurek Brooks and husband, Jon, of Snook; Alice Kocurek of Snook; special friends Rudy and Bonnie Hibbler and daughter, Britany, of Jewett; six nieces and nephews; six great nieces and nephews; two great great nieces and one great great nephew. William's parents, Willie and Della Kocurek preceded him in death.
